Ryedale Musical Memories

This project is now archived. This page is retained for information purposes. Many of the venues we worked with are continuing to host regular music memories sessions - contact your local community building or visit the Music Memories Twitter Feed (@MMRyedale) for more information.

Meet new friends, enjoy a cuppa and have fun at these relaxed, sociable singing sessions, where everyone is welcome. No previous singing experience is necessary! Just come along for a happy hour of singing with guitar and/or piano accompaniment. If you enjoy singing in the shower, in the car or around the house, then this is the perfect session for you.

Rural Action Yorkshire is delighted to announce that it is working with Ruth and Neil Hannah of Musical Memories to offer free music memories singing sessions to community buildings across the Ryedale district. Musical Memories sessions provide local residents, especially older people, the opportunity to get together in a social setting, to make new friends whilst having a good sing, reminisce about past times, and even get some exercise! They also provide those who care for an older person a great chance either for a break or to take part in an activity with the person they care for outside of the home.
The project will initially provide support for six sessions at each of six community buildings. Each session lasts about 60 minutes, beginning with a short warm-up exercise, two 20 minutes singing sessions with accompaniment from guitar or piano with a ten-minute coffee break in between, and a final five minute 'farewell' song. There will also be time for people who attend the session to chat with one another and with members of the project team.

Musical Memories aims to reach out to everyone regardless of musical ability, mobility difficulties or physical limitations and in this way hopes to promote social inclusion, improve local connections and increase happiness and well-being. Community buildings that wish to take part in the project will need to be able to host a total of six sessions in a warm room, and be able to promote the scheme locally to ensure around ten beneficiaries attend each session. They should also be willing to act as the initial point of contact for people wanting to book a place at one of the sessions. The community building should also be prepared to offer the use of the hall for free as their in-kind contribution to the project.

In return, Ruth and Neil at Musical Memories will run the sessions, providing all materials and resources. They will also manage the attendance register and get feedback from those who attend. If the sessions prove successful, RAY will then work with Musical Memories team and the community building to investigate potential sources of funding that would enable the sessions to continue.

Musical Memories ‘Happy Hour’ sessions are already planned for Middleton and Aislaby, Helmsley Arts Centre and Weaverthorpe. We do still have availability for host halls, so do get in touch if you'd like to see these sessions in your local community, however  we do anticipate a high demand for this project, so get in touch soon!
