The Government has announced final details of the new LEADER programme, which will direct a total of £138m of funding to rural businesses and communities across England over the next five years to 2020.
LEADER is a European-wide approach to distributing funds which emphasises the role of local communities in determining local priorities. Applications for funding are made to a body known as a Local Action Group, which is made up of local businesses and community organisations.
Following an appointment process a total of 80 Local Action Groups, covering 85% of rural England, have now been established. They manage the process of determining local priorities for funding and inviting applications. The funding itself ultimately comes from the Government's Rural Development Programme and is managed nationally by the Rural Payments Agency.
The new LEADER programme is aimed at projects which are intended to improve farm and forestry productivity; support small and new businesses; support farm diversification; support rural tourism; provide rural services; or support cultural or heritage activity.
Most Local Action Groups will distribute funding over the course of the five years in a number of funding rounds, each aimed at particular activity and priorities. We will maintain news of these as they are announced on our Funding page, but we strongly recommend that you contact your Local Action Group to have an initial discussion about your idea, or to sign up for updates to be alerted when their various calls for applications open.
