Community Led Housing
The Enabling Affordable Community Led Housing in North Yorkshire and East Riding project (the project) is being led by Rural Action Yorkshire in partnership with the North and East Yorkshire Rural Housing Enabler Network (RHE Network).
Supported by the Nationwide Foundation, and match funded by the UK Cohousing Network, the RHE Network and North Star Housing Group, the project will identify the opportunities and potential for community led affordable housing development in rural North Yorkshire and East Riding. The aim is for this to be a catalyst to community led housing being a greater part of the solutions to meet rural housing need by making the links between national studies and policy context, local/sub regional capacity and community aspirations. Importantly, the project will produce a suite of resources that will encourage and support communities across England to take forward community led housing projects.
Community-led housing allows people and communities to lead in providing their own housing solutions – creating sustainable, affordable and lasting homes; building resilient and confident local communities; and helping people to develop skills they never knew they had. It can take a variety of legal forms: current models include self-help housing, cohousing, cooperatives, community land trusts and community self-build.
Hudswell Community Charity have announced that they have been granted planning permission for a new development of affordable rented homes for local people, in the first housing development of its kind in North Yorkshire. Read more.
Rural Action Yorkshire and the North and East Yorkshire Rural Housing Enabler Network (RHE Network) have launched a new survey for Parish and Town Councils to find out if community-led housing might make a difference in their village or town.
The survey is part of a project to help communities look at solving the problem of the lack of affordable, good quality housing in their own village or market town by taking forward community-led housing solutions.
We are looking for 5 communities who would be intersted in community-led housing, if you are interested in signing up for help with community-led housing, or for more information on community-led housing, please email Sarah.Hall@Hambleton.gov.uk or Leah.Swain@ruralyorkshire.org.uk or telephone Sarah Hall on 01609 767090 or Leah Swain on 01904 704177.
