RAY seeks views on strategy for rural Yorkshire

Over the past few months Rural Action Yorkshire (RAY) has been developing a Rural Strategy to review the state of rural Yorkshire, highlight potential opportunities and challenges and suggest priority areas for future activity, both for us and for other organisations working in rural Yorkshire. We have been working in partnership with Humber and Wolds RCC to ensure we are able to present issues and ideas that have resonance across the whole of Yorkshire.

We are currently in a period when significant powers are being devolved – to City Regions and Local Enterprise Partnerships for example – and European strategic funding programmes for 2014-2020 are being finalised. In addition many local authorities are having to make public spending cuts and are seeking views on what activities they should prioritise in their budgets. There is an opportunity to take stock of how many of these changes might affect rural Yorkshire and how rural areas can fully contribute to the wider benefit of the region.

Attached is a copy of our first draft which I hope that you will read and let us know your thoughts. We want as many local views as we can attract during the consultation period in order to be able to reflect these views in our final version of the strategy and the resulting action plan. We would particularly like to know what, in your view, should be the top three priorities for rural Yorkshire over the next six years. We appreciate that many people will be contributing to local LEADER strategies at this time but we are keen to ensure we have a comprehensive Yorkshire Rural Strategy to inform other potential funders too.

You can submit your responses to the Rural Strategy at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CYMRQ89  Please note the new deadline for responses is Monday 11 August 2014.

We have also arranged a number of consultation events to gather as many views as possible. These are intended as an opportunity for you to discuss the Rural Strategy with us and highlight what you think the main priorities are. The consultation events are open to anyone with an interest in strengthening rural communities: business, rural groups, parish councils, policy-makers and so on.

Consultation events arranged so far will take place as follows:

  • 30 June 2014 at 7pm – The Marsden Mechanics Hall, Peel Street, Huddersfield, HD7 6BW
  • 3 July 2014 at 10.30am –Thornton le Dale Village Hall, Pickering Road, YO18 7SD

If you would like to attend either of these consultation events, please RSVP to info@ruralyorkshire.org.uk or call us on 0845 313 0270.

Please circulate the details of this consultation to anyone you know who may be interested in contributing, as we are keen to hear from as wide a range of stakeholders as possible.

Finally, if you would like to respond to the draft strategy in more detail than via the survey but cannot attend one of the consultation events, please send your comments to Tina Chamberlain via email or by calling 0845 313 0270.

Next Steps

Once we have collated and analysed all the feedback received we will use your views to revise the draft strategy and develop an action plan to help support the agreed priorities. If you have contributed feedback to the strategy we will email you a copy of the final document.
