A NEW survey has revealed the social impact of village halls and other buildings to communities across England, highlighting the role they play in sustaining thriving activities in what can be isolated and deprived environments, as well as the factors which threaten their survival.

WINTER preparation must start now if rural communities are to avoid rocketing oil prices and health risks associated with fuel poverty, says a new campaign launched recently by Westminster.

A NEW scheme will look at the social issues facing older and vulnerable people across Doncaster and seek novel ways of addressing them. Looking at the persisting problems of digital exclusion and social isolation in particular, the scheme will operate both rurally and in urban areas and utilise tablets and app technology as potential means of relieving such issues.

Housing minister Brandon Lewis has been urged to protect small rural communities from Government proposals which could drastically cut the development of new affordable homes. Rural Action Yorkshire is backing the plea by its national body ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), which has written to the Minister to outline its objections.

COMMUNITY resilience and emergency planning will form the backdrop of an event open to the public in October, which will offer ideas and training on how to handle severe winter weather and keep people safe and warm in the coming months, as well as the many other issues facing rural Yorkshire.
